I have a couple of questions. Did you have to sculpt and make molds for those enormous creatures, or if not how did you build them? And, how do you transport something like that giant octopus? What is all this stuff for? Its pretty darn amazing if you ask me. _________________ www.petemurph.com |

Dope...those Jellies are beautiful, and everything else is awesome too. Are you sculpting in foam? And to second the above question, are you molding all this stuff, or are the sculpts just coated? If just coated, what do you use?...fiberglass? ( chop gun? ) Urethane?
great stuff!!!

Very very cool, triceratops used to be my favorite dinosaur.
What's this stuff made of and is it for a museum or something? |

Thanks for all the kind words. We have really put a LOT of work into this stuff, but it really seems to be paying off... They are fairly unhappy with the rest of the work being done by the other companies like us, but are over the moon about us. As a result, we should be getting most of the work from the subsequent projects in the future instead of the 25% or so that we got on this one.

This stuff is all for a new themed restaurant called T-Rex Cafe'. This is just the first of about 10 of the being opened by the originator of the Rainforest Cafe. Our studio produces mosly stuff for large themed restaurants, nightclubs, retail stores, theme parks etc...
The octopus and nautilus were sculpted out of EPS, foiled, fiberglassed and hollowed out, then cut into sections. There was a lot more to it than that, but that's the simple version Transportation is definately a big consideration, not to mention that everything has to go through a 7' x 9' door onsite! The tentacles were molded since we are making moving rubber ones... We were planning on molding the whole octopus and nautilus, but we ended up not having nearly enough time, plus the next one might be even bigger! The second location is to be in Pleasure Island at Downtown Disney, Orlando.
The jellyfish were sculpted in urethane foam, fiberglassed and finished. Silicone molds were taken then the casts were produced using our rotational casting machine and clear resin, I think I even threw in a shot of one of the body molds in full flight.
The Trike, ribs and Pterodons are straight up foam and fiberglass.
The big shell booths were foam and glass, fiberglass molds were produced, then laid up in gelcoat and glass.
Once we get a bit closer to the end of this thing, I'll try to post a bunch of "in progress" photos. I've been taking tons of them. |

This is fantastic stuff!
I love seeing all the behind the scenes of how this stuff is made. Foam and fiberglass fabrication has been a bit of a mystery when done on this scale...a lot like building a boat!

Well, the first 2 semi-traliers pulled out on Saturday to deliver the Octopus, the nautilus, jellies and a few other items. My "away team" starts the install today. I stayed behind to finish up the next wave of stuff and start a few extras they threw our way. Now they want a 12' jellyfish to go over one of the booth. That should be AWESOME. We'll also be doing a 30' "lava wall" and a 35' tall tree.
Right now I'm working on getting the tentacles' pneumatics dialed in and just starting on the programming. Got a faulty driver board and had to send it back, so I'm already behind a week on that...
I'll try to get another round of pictures up soon. It's been so crazy that I haven't even had a chance to look at any of the pictures, much less post anything.... |
